Lee from Everett writes: Mike, would the Seahawks consider cutting Deion Branch if he can't show anything during the preseason?
Mike Sando: The buzz surrounding Branch amounts to speculation. Branch is scheduled to earn $4.94 million and his role seems less defined after the team added T.J. Houshmandzadeh in free agency and Deon Butler in the draft.
It's a fun discussion to have, but anyone who watched the Seahawks play last season knows the team should be reluctant to take for granted its depth at the position. Branch and Nate Burleson have both undergone serious knee operations in the past two years. Releasing Branch would create only marginal salary-cap savings while severely altering the team's depth at the position.
The receiver position looks like a potential strength with Branch on the roster. Subtract him from the mix and the Seahawks would be left with two proven players at the position, and one of them coming off knee surgery.
Expect the Seahawks to stick with Branch.
