Tavon Austin day-to-day with ankle injury

By Nick Wagoner

EARTH CITY, Mo. -- St. Louis Rams rookie Tavon Austin suffered an ankle injury after a 56-yard run against the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday.

Austin stayed down for a few moments after the run, and it initially looked as though it could be something serious. But Austin walked off on his own power and actually returned to the game soon after for a punt return. Moments after that, though, the Rams removed Austin from the game and announced that he would not return.

In the immediate aftermath of the game, Rams coach Jeff Fisher said Austin's ankle would require a closer look upon return to St. Louis. On Monday afternoon, Fisher provided something of an update on Austin's status.

"We did our tests and he'll be day-to-day this week," Fisher said.

For those who pay attention, the translation of that answer in Fisher-speak would usually indicate Austin's injury isn't too serious. He normally doesn't provide much detail when it comes to injuries, unless it's something that's going to last for extended time. That's not a hard and fast rule of interpretation, but at least something of a guideline in most cases.

We'll see where Austin is when the Rams return to practice Wednesday as they begin preparations for Sunday's game against New Orleans at the Edward Jones Dome. As the team's best hope for providing big plays, Austin's presence is clearly important to an offense that has struggled to score in the past two weeks.
