If the 49ers are leaning toward Scott Linehan as offensive coordinator, as Matt Maiocco suggests, the reasoning could be quite practical.
One, Linehan has been a head coach and a coordinator. Mike Singletary is a defensive head coach known more for his leadership and broader philosophy than game planning, play calling or game management. Linehan has experience in each of those areas. He provides some insurance for Singletary. And of course he likes to run the ball, which dovetails with Singletary's philosophy.
Two, Linehan's poor record as the Rams' head coach makes it less likely he'll bolt for a head-coaching job in the next couple of seasons. One of the other candidates, Rob Chudzinski, would have had a better chance at leaving for a better job if the 49ers enjoyed success on his watch. Given the turnover the 49ers have experienced at coordinator, they're very much interested in finally finding some continuity in the role.
