Refresher: NFL overtime rules for playoffs

By Mike Sando

A quick look at what the 2010 NFL Rule Book says, verbatim, about overtime for postseason games:

Rule 16, Article 4

For postseason games, following a coin flip (Article 2 above) and an intermission of no more than three minutes after the end of the regular game, the following shall apply:
Something to keep in mind as wild-card games approach. The Seattle Seahawks went to overtime in the playoffs against Green Bay following the 2003 season. The new rule would not have applied in that game. Each team had possession once before Seattle took over on the fateful drive. Green Bay's Al Harris picked off Seahawks quarterback Matt Hasselbeck, returning the interception 52 yards for the winning touchdown.

Apologies in advance to any Seattle fans who had expunged that memory from their minds.
