49ers quarterback Alex Smith just threw an interception against the Raiders, but he has shown some moxie in other ways during the team's exhibition game Saturday night.
Smith flattened veteran Raiders linebacker Greg Ellis during a running play. The play lost yardage, but fans at Candlestick Park cheered after Smith put down Ellis. Smith tossed an interception shortly thereafter, but he hustled back to make a touchdown-saving tackle after a 47-yard return. Smith was throwing to Josh Morgan on the play and Morgan appeared to misplay the ball, according to the 49ers' radio team.
Those types of plays won't necessarily help Smith win the starting job, but the 49ers want to see competitiveness from him. They are seeing it Saturday night.
Smith's stat line so far: 3 of 8 passing for 30 yards, one interception and a 9.4 rating. The 49ers have held possession for 7 minutes 23 seconds. The game is late in the first quarter and scoreless.
