Ranking kickers as Akers deals with threats

By Mike Sando

San Francisco 49ers kicker David Akers has apparently departed Twitter after re-tweeting a threat against him.

Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee has the details.

Akers drew much praise last season while setting a franchise record with 44 made field goals. The achievement was significant because Akers connected on 7 of 9 attempts from 50-plus yards, an unusually high percentage for him. He has made just 1 of 5 such attempts so far this season. Akers has actually made a higher percentage from 40-49 yards, but his overall percentage is down from 84.6 last season to 71.4 this season.

The 49ers' improvement on offense this season has prevented Akers from padding his overall percentage with shorter field-goal tries. He has made 18 of 20 attempts from inside 40 yards this season. That is down from 31 of 32 attempts from that range last season.

St. Louis' Greg Zuerlein is the new long-distance king in the NFC West. He has made 7 of 12 attempts from 50-plus yards. Only Minnesota's Blair Walsh has made more attempts from that distance. Walsh has made all eight tries from 50-plus yards.

Zuerlein has made 3 of 7 from 55-plus yards. No one else has made more than two from that distance. No one else has attempted more than four.
