Around the NFC West: Crabtree in clear?
By Mike Sando
Michael Crabtree's connection to a sexual-assault investigation made for a sensational story heading into the NFC Championship Game.
It's only fair to emphasize the flip side of the story now that the evidence against the San Francisco 49ers' leading receiver appears weak.
Andrew Ross' piece for the San Francisco Chronicle quotes a law-enforcement source saying witnesses supported Crabtree's version of events.
"According to a San Francisco law enforcement source, the woman who lodged the allegation was one of three women who joined Crabtree in a party at a room in the tony W Hotel on Third Street," Ross wrote. "The other two women have told investigators that Crabtree didn't assault anyone, said the source, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the investigation is continuing. Police haven't found any physical evidence of an attack, the source added."
This information is consistent with previous reports suggesting the 49ers expected no charges for Crabtree. I'll be back a bit later with an item looking at Crabtree and the 49ers' wide receivers for what they've done on the field.
