Shortstop Jose Reyes headed to disabled list

After trying to play through a cracked rib, Toronto Blue Jays shortstop Jose Reyes is going on the disabled list, according to multiple media reports.

Reyes missed a series against the Atlanta Braves a weekend ago. He believes he hurt himself on a check swing in early April on the road against Baltimore. He said an MRI two weeks ago revealed the cracked rib and a strained muscle.

After sitting out the series against the Braves, Reyes returned to hit 3-for-23 with two RBI and five strikeouts.

Manager John Gibbons previously said the Blue Jays were hoping Reyes could avoid going on the disabled list. The pain was worse when the switch-hitting Reyes batted left-handed, so Toronto was experimenting with Reyes hitting from the right side until he healed.

He did not play Sunday against the Rays and went 1-for-4 Monday in a 6-5 loss to the Boston Red Sox, flinging his bat and helmet after striking out swinging to end the second inning.
