Shortstop Jose Reyes headed to disabled list

After trying to play through a cracked rib, Toronto Blue Jays shortstop Jose Reyes is going on the disabled list, according to multiple media reports.

Reyes missed a series against the Atlanta Braves a weekend ago. He believes he hurt himself on a check swing in early April on the road against Baltimore. He said MRI two weeks ago revealed the cracked rib and a strained muscle.

After sitting out the series against the Braves, Reyes returned to hit 3-for-23 with 2 RBI and five strikeouts.

Manager John Gibbons previously said the Blue Jays were hoping Reyes could avoid going on the disabled list. The pain was worse when the switch-hitting Reyes batted left-handed so Toronto was experimenting with Reyes hitting from the right side until he healed.

He did not play Sunday against the Rays and went 1-for-4 Monday in a 6-5 loss to the Boston Red Sox, flinging his bat and helmet after striking out swinging to end the second inning.
