FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- Last week after defensive tackle Sheldon Richardson ran the ball for a touchdown during a goal-line stand, he joked that he sought out running back Chris Ivory.

"I told him, I'll show him how to carry the rock," Richardson said with a laugh.

So the question becomes, should Richardson be running for defensive rookie of the year, offensive rookie of the year, or both?

"Offensive rookie of the year after he scored that touchdown," fellow defender Quinton Coples said.

Seriously though, CB Antonio Cromartie said Richardson deserved the rookie of the year.

"He's been balling out since Day 1," Cromartie said. "I think he really should be [defensive rookie of the year]. He's been busting his behind doing the things he needs to do. I think he's made more plays than anybody from a defensive linemen standpoint that is a rookie from that position. I don't really hear too many other rookie players that are playing as well as him, either. "

Richardson is hopeful that he gets the award, but he's playing it pretty cool.

"Somebody told me I've been leading all year, I hope I wouldn't fall off."

Whether or not Richardson does, Coples said the combination of Richardson, Muhammad Wilkerson, Damon Harrison and the rest of the defense is a good foundation for the Jets future.

"I think this year was an incredible growth year for us and I think the future is scary." Coples said. "It's just a matter of putting the work in and making it happen."
