But according to research provided by the Roster Management System, Tannehill is providing the Dolphins solid bang for their buck.
Tannehill was the 18th rated quarterback last season, according to the Total Quarterback Rating system (QBR). However, only three quarterbacks rated higher than Tannehill had a lower salary.
The Dolphins selected Tannehill in the first round (No. 8 overall) in 2012. His cap charge last season was $2,789,205, which is low for the position. Tannehill had a better QBR last season than more expensive quarterbacks such as Ben Roethlisberger ($13,595,000), Sam Bradford ($12,600,425) and Eli Manning ($20,850,000).
Tannehill is entering Year 3 of his rookie contract. His cap charge will only be $3,455,046 next season, which is affordable for a starting quarterback. The Dolphins must do a better job using their cap room to build around Tannehill.
It's unknown if Tannehill is the long-term solution in Miami. But he's done enough to be the Dolphins' starting quarterback next season, and the financial risk is not costly.
