The Baltimore Ravens are hosting Steve Smith on Friday while keeping in contact with another free-agent wide receiver. The Ravens are expressing "some level of interest" in Patriots slot receiver Julian Edelman, according to ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.
This could be the Ravens' way of hurrying Smith's decision-making along. He apparently wants to take more visits, and the Ravens would like to get their void at wide receiver resolved. If Smith knows the Ravens are talking to another receiver, he may be less inclined to walk away from a deal.
The Ravens, though, have a legitimate reason to be interested in Edelman. He's eight years younger than Smith and has more experience playing in the slot than him. Edelman fits what the Ravens want: a receiver who can make the tough catches underneath and can break tackles to convert third downs. The question with Edelman is how many catches will he make when Tom Brady isn't the one throwing him the ball.
A few hours before free agency officially kicked off, I projected three targets for the Baltimore Ravens at wide receiver. Golden Tate quickly signed with the Detroit Lions, but one of the other two on the list (Smith and Edelman) could become the Ravens' next slot receiver.
