OXNARD, Calif. -- Terrell McClain and Rolando McClain are not related, but the Dallas Cowboys' defenders have one thing in common: Injuries have prevented them from practicing.

Rolando McClain is closer to being 100 percent from a quadriceps strain. He went through part of Saturday’s padded practice, sitting out of team drills. The Cowboys are mindful of his absence from football since November 2012 but have liked what they've seen in the small doses and want to see if he can do more for a defense that needs help.

“He needs to play football,” coach Jason Garrett said. “He needs to get out here, and that’s the challenge of the situation that he has with his injury. We’re trying to do everything we can with him to get him acclimated to playing this defense and show us what he can do.”

Terrell McClain, a defensive tackle, has had just one full padded practice in training camp. He has a high ankle sprain.

“We’re hopeful that he’ll be back in a week or so, so he can practice and play in one or two of these preseason games because he was off to such a great start in training camp and really showed up all throughout spring and continued that into the first part of camp,” Garrett said. “So we need to get him back. He can be an explosive player inside for us.”

Cornerback Sterling Moore (groin) will return to full team drills on Sunday, while Morris Claiborne (knee) will be watched through individual drills to see how he responds. Safety Ahmad Dixon (concussion) will not practice Sunday and Garrett said the hope is he could be “back by the end of the week.”

Cornerback Brandon Carr will do more Sunday than he did Saturday, but he will not take team snaps until the Cowboys practice against the Oakland Raiders on Tuesday.
