Saints take safe route at center

The New Orleans Saints have signed veteran center Olin Kreutz, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Interesting move, but not surprising because it kind of fits how the Saints do business. They let veteran center Jonathan Goodwin depart via free agency. They had prepared for that by drafting Matt Tennant last year.

But the Saints might not be ready to completely hand the job to Tennant. That’s because the Saints are a veteran team with a window to the Super Bowl that they believe is still open. When you’re in that kind of situation, it’s not easy to throw inexperienced players into the lineup and let them develop.

Maybe Kreutz’s arrival will light a fire under Tennant and he’ll step forward and claim the job. But, the more likely scenario is that the Saints will let Kreutz start for a year and give Tennant a little more time to develop.
