Recently overheard at a San Francisco Bay Area airport: fans of the San Francisco 49ers and Oakland Raiders arguing over which franchise had won more division titles.

Elias Sports Bureau settled the argument this week with a chart showing the 49ers, but not the Raiders, among teams with the most division titles in the Super Bowl era.

I went through the Pro Football Reference franchise pages and counted 17 division titles for the Raiders since the 1966 season. They currently lead the AFC West, so an 18th could be on the way.

Also via Pro Football Reference, I counted 15 division titles for the Los Angeles/St. Louis Rams, seven for the Seattle Seahawks and four for the St. Louis/Arizona Cardinals.

Winning a division title has become easier, in theory, since the NFL realigned into eight four-team divisions beginning with the 2002 season.
