Parcells' moves through the years

PALM BEACH, Fla. -- With the news that the New Orleans Saints will meet with Bill Parcells to talk about the legendary coach stepping in for Sean Payton, it’s time for a little run through history.

In addition to winning a lot of games, Parcells track record shows the man nicknamed “The Tuna’’ has a history of flip-flopping around. He’s changed jobs multiple times and even left the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at the altar – twice.

So let’s keep that in mind as we wait to see if anything plays out with Parcells and the Saints. Let’s start by reviewing a short quote Parcells gave Peter King in this story.

"Do I have the bug?'' Parcells said when asked if he had a strong desire to return to coaching. "I don't think so.''

Now, with help from ESPN senior researcher Peter Newmann, let’s take a look at some Parcells quotes at various times he’s made career moves in the past.

  • "I feel like it's time. Players come and go; Coaches come and go. I think it's time. My instincts are usually good and I have a feeling about this." -- From the New York Times on May 15, 1991 when Parcells resigned from the Giants.

  • "This is definitely the end of my football career. There won't be any coaching rumors about Bill Parcells, because I've coached my last game. You can write that on your chalkboard. This job has turned into a 365-day-a-year job and it's difficult, because I've been doing it for 15 years in this league and I think it's time ... in fact I know it's time." -- From the New York Daily News on Jan. 3, 2000 when Parcells “retired’’ from the Jets.

  • “It’s time. Physically, I can do it. I’m in good shape. Mentally, I just feel like it’s time to stop. I know I’m stopping for good.’’ – From the New York Daily News on Jan. 27, 2007 as he “retired’’ from coaching the Cowboys.

  • "It's a young man's game in terms of coaching, and I know it's time for someone else to be doing those things. And if I can assist that person in any manner with my experience or the technical aspect -- if he would seek out that -- then I'm happy to contribute any way I can. But it's going to be a team effort here. It's not going to be one guy doing everything, I promise you that." -- From ESPN on Dec. 20, 2007, upon joining the front office of the Miami Dolphins.
