Browns coach Pat Shurmur said he expected the question. But he provided an unexpected answer.

Asked once again when he plans to name a starting quarterback, Shurmur provided a potential timetable on when it might happen. Shurmur said he could announce his decision anytime between now and the first preseason game Aug. 10 in Detroit. In other words, Brandon Weeden has a good chance of officially getting the title of "starting quarterback" over the next 15 days.

"I think it makes sense to name the starter well before the start of the season, and so that's probably what will happen," Shurmur said a couple of days before the Browns' first full-team practice of training camp. "I've said all along sooner is better. I want to get all of the guys out here and watch them work again. I've had a chance to go over what everybody did in the spring numerous times and I feel good about what I saw from Brandon and Colt [McCoy] and Seneca [Wallace]. So I'll have some form of an announcement soon."

Shurmur previously hinted that a starter could be named at the beginning of training camp, but that won't happen now. Still, there isn't much suspense in this quarterback competition. Weeden went first in most of the drills Wednesday just like he did during the team's mandatory minicamp last month.

I understand the desire to make Weeden feel like he has to win the job, but it's in the Browns' best interest to end the charade. Weeden and this Browns young offense (which could start four rookies) needs as many snaps as they can get in the preseason. It serves no purpose to give McCoy or Wallace any playing time in the first half of the first three preseason games.

And when Weeden gets the nod, he will become the Browns' 10th opening day starting quarterback in 14 years.
