Game day has started nicely for the Oakland Raiders.
They are apparently securing a key player for the long-term. Jason La Canfora of CBSSports.com is reporting via Twitter that Oakland will finalize a contract extension for fullback Marcel Reece on Monday. No details of the extension were reported. Oakland opens the season against San Diego on Monday night on ESPN’s “Monday Night Football.”
Reece has long been seeking a contract extension. He stayed away from the team’s offseason program for a while earlier this year. Still, when he returned the team made it clear it wanted to get a deal done with him. He was set to be a restricted free agent next offseason. Oakland was able to clear some salary-cap space as the offseason moved along, making this move possible.
Reece is an important part of Oakland’s offense. He is extremely versatile. He can play a traditional fullback role as well as play some tailback, tight end and receiver. Keeping this underrated player kicks off the 2012 season well for Oakland.
