The San Diego Chargers might have even more offensive challenges Sunday in their home opener against Tennessee.
The team listed both tight end Antonio Gates (ribs) and running back Ryan Mathews (broken clavicle) as questionable on the injury report. Both were limited in practice Friday. It was the first time Gates practiced this week, and it was the second consecutive day Mathews practiced.
San Diego coach Norv Turner told reporters that Gates might be more ready to play than Mathews, and U-T San Diego indicated Mathews might need another week.
Mathews has been out since the first preseason game, and the team continues to be without left tackle Jared Gaither (back) and receiver Vincent Brown (ankle). Gates’ injury situation is frustrating for the Chargers, because he overcame a four-year battle with foot injuries. He was hurt in the win at Oakland on Monday.
