Atlanta Falcons coach Mike Smith is a big believer in first impressions.
That may be one reason the Falcons are off to a 3-0 start this season and have had nothing but winning seasons since Smith’s arrival in 2008.
The Falcons have been starting fast. They have not trailed this season and lead the league with 20 points scored on their first possession.
That’s nothing new. Since 2008, the Falcons have scored more points on their first possession than any other team. In that span, they’ve scored 193 points on their first possession. The New Orleans Saints (185 points) are second.
“It’s something we’ve done the entire time I’ve been here and we take a lot of pride in it,’’ Smith said. “We put a lot of emphasis on first impressions and a fast start is the best impression. First impressions set the tone. You don’t want to ease into it.’’
