The Saints released receiver Greg Camarillo to clear the roster spot for Vilma.
Although Vilma has had only three days of practice, he’s expected to play about 20 to 30 plays, according to ESPN’s Ed Werder.
Vilma was suspended for the season by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, but he’s eligible to play while the suspension is awaiting an appeal hearing. Vilma had spent the first six weeks of the season on PUP while recovering from a knee injury.
What’s unclear is whether the Saints will use Vilma at his traditional spot at middle linebacker or if they’ll shift him to the outside. The Saints signed Curtis Lofton in free agency, and he’s played well in the middle this offseason.
The Saints have had problems with injuries and mediocre play at outside linebacker, so it’s possible Vilma could slide outside. It’s also possible the Saints could use Vilma in the middle in certain situations and let Lofton move outside.
