Scouting Tannehill and others in late going

11/16/2012

Seattle Seahawks fans scouting the Miami Dolphins on Thursday night had to like what they saw.

The Dolphins, despite feeling great about rookie quarterback Ryan Tannehill overall, suffered a 19-14 defeat when Tannehill couldn't rally them against Buffalo.

The Seahawks face the Dolphins in Week 12 and have fared well against most of the quarterbacks they have faced.

Tannehill has now completed 4 of 15 passes for 63 yards and two interceptions when trailing by eight or fewer points in the final two minutes of games, according to a note ESPN Stats & Information released following the game. The eight-point window was selected because it represents one-score differentials.

That note made me wonder how NFC West quarterbacks have fared in those situations. And because Tannehill is part of the rookie quarterback class featuring Seattle's Russell Wilson, I expanded the list to include Andrew Luck and Robert Griffin III as well.

Arizona's Kevin Kolb, who helped rally the Cardinals past Miami, heads the list.

The numbers for Wilson are borderline horrible: 9-of-24 passing (37.5 percent) with three sacks and only four total first downs. That included 2-of-9 passing for 13 yards against Arizona in Week 1, when Wilson's receivers couldn't handle multiple passes to the end zone in the late going. It also included 2-of-7 passing against Green Bay in Week 3, a game Wilson ultimately won with that disputed Hail Mary pass to Golden Tate.

Wilson has improved overall in recent weeks, including during these late-game situations when the deficit is small. The second chart breaks out the same numbers since Week 6, when Wilson completed the winning touchdown pass to Sidney Rice against New England.

Note that the San Francisco 49ers' Alex Smith has not faced such a situation yet this season.
