ATLANTA -- I’m not sure what to make of Adam Schefter’s report that NFL officials and Sean Payton’s agent are finalizing conditions for the suspended coach to negotiate a contract extension with the New Orleans Saints.
Schefter said the conditions are supposed to be given to agent Donald Yee by the weekend and discussions are expected to begin after that.
The strange thing here is that NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said several weeks ago that Payton and the Saints are free to negotiate an extension.
Maybe I’m just being suspicious, but this thing seems to be dragging on longer than it should and that’s only going to fuel speculation that Payton could end up coaching in Dallas, instead of New Orleans.
Payton signed an extension in 2011, but that deal was voided because it included clauses the NFL said didn’t meet its policies.
