The New England Patriots got more bad news about their cornerback situation on Wednesday.
Patriots starting corner Alfonzo Dennard was found guilty on three charges, including assault of a police officer, during an incident in Nebraska last April. The Omaha World-Herald reports Dennard could face a maximum of six years in prison, although that is the worst-case scenario. Sentencing for Dennard will take place on April 11.
At the very least, Dennard could face a suspension by the NFL after being found guilty on three charges. Would it be a one-game suspension? Four games? Eight games? That remains to be seen.
However, New England must make plans to be without Dennard for the beginning of next season. It doesn't help that New England's other starting corner – Aqib Talib – is an unrestricted free agent. Nickel corner Kyle Arrington also is a free agent.
Cornerback was a big area of need even before Dennard's offseason troubles. But now it is reaching crisis levels if New England cannot re-sign Talib and Dennard is suspended.
