Bill Polian’s got an Insider file up discussing each team’s top needsInsider as they approach the time to start adding via free agency and then the draft.

Let’s have a look.

Texans

Polian’s key need: OLB

“Texans LB Connor Barwin will be on the market, and if he is not re-signed the need for a pass-rushing outside linebacker is obvious. Might defensive coordinator Wade Phillips be interested in one of his former Dallas players? If the Texans can complement J.J. Watt in any way, they would have a very impressive front seven.”

My thoughts: The Texans certainly need more of a pass rush from guys besides J.J. Watt, but I would expect they think Antonio Smith, Brooks Reed, Whitney Mercilus and a healthy Brian Cushing can provide it. While they’d need to add an outside linebacker if Barwin leaves, I’m not sure it would rank as priority one ahead of receiver or an offensive lineman for the right side.

Colts

Polian’s key need: O-line

“The biggest need here is on the offensive line (41 sacks allowed in 2012), particularly on the right side. The Colts have plenty of cap room and there are quality offensive linemen available in free agency. It makes all kinds of sense for the Colts to invest in keeping franchise quarterback, Andrew Luck, upright.”

My thoughts: Polian lists cornerback as second. Corner and O-line are probably about equal needs. The team’s additions slanted strongly to offense last year. Still, I’m with Polian and virtually everyone else -- the need to protect Luck should trump all.

Titans

Polian’s key need: O-line

“The receiving corps needs upgrading and a quality cornerback would be a plus, but the offensive line is the area that provides the best value and help this offseason. Between the draft and free agency, they can find some solid fixes for a line that allowed 39 sacks in 2012.”

My thoughts: I don’t think the Titans will do much at receiver, and I think they feel pretty good about their top two corners. They’ve said they plan to revamp the offensive line and all indications are that this is a good draft if you need offensive linemen.

Jaguars

Polian’s key need: O-line

"The value high in the draft will be on the defensive side of the ball, so it might be best to attack all offensive line positions via free agency. The Jaguars definitely need to improve that unit after it allowed the third-most sacks in the league in 2012 (50) and contributed to a running game that finished with the third-fewest yards (1,369)."

My thoughts: The Jaguars have really emphasized they won’t be big players in free agency, but this roster needs more than a draft to get more competitive in 2013. I’d love to see GM David Caldwell, who used to work for Polian, follow Polian’s idea here.
