What's this? Eagles cornerback Lito Sheppard's upset about his role on the team? I'm trying to figure out why this qualifies as news two days before the NFL season kicks off.

Lito's been saying this stuff to everyone (including me) ever since Asante Samuel was signed in March. Oh well, here's another round of Sheppard stories:

  • Rob Maadi, who does excellent work for the AP, talks about how Sheppard's injuries have driven down his value. But the good news is that Lito has his priorities straight. Enjoy this gem:

"When I'm out on the field, I'm playing for me," he said. "Anything that happens from that point, it's on me. I just have to make sure I can get out there."

I love to see a guy who's willing to put himself first. I've built my career on that philosophy. Oh, and one more thing: I'm not sure why people are calling the Eagles' cornerback situation a "logjam." Most teams would do anything to have three Pro Bowl-quality corners. That's why you don't hear Andy Reid and Jim Johnson reacting to Sheppard's whining. The man has no leverage. And the Eagles are not a benevolent organization when it comes to contracts.

  • Les Bowen of the Daily News talks about the YouTube video that agent Drew Rosenhaus made on Sheppard's behalf. Rosenhaus indicates that it's not right for Sheldon Brown to be starting ahead of Sheppard. Really? There are a couple of longtime Eagles beat writers I talked to recently who said that Brown's the best corner on the team -- period.
  • John Gonzalez talks about Sheppard in his debut column for the Philly Inquirer. John grew up in Philadelphia and is a die-hard Eagles fan, which is to say he also hates them every other day.
  • Defensive end Chris Clemons can finally show Eagles fans why the team signed him. He, obviously, has talent, but staying on the field will be his biggest challenge.
