He's disappointed he lost his cool.
Smith said this to Mark Berman of the local Fox 26: "I am disappointed in myself I was able to let [Richie Incognito] get to me in the way that he did. ... I just swung the helmet out of frustration."
Smith told John McClain of the Houston Chronicle he pulled back and wasn't trying to hit Incognito. He also said: "Biggest disappointment is not being able to help my team."
As Adam Schefter reported earlier today, Smith will appeal the suspension.
Got some questions today about whether it was possible for Smith to lose more regular- season games due to the appeals process. The answer is no.
Certain suspensions are put in pause when a player appeals, but suspensions for on-field disciplinary matters do not fit into that category, according to NFL spokesman Greg Aiello. Once the suspension is announced, Smith can appeal it, which he is planning on doing.
The appeal can be expedited to be heard before the first potential missed game.
