EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- The Jets confirmed the worst-kept secret around the team, announcing Matt Simms will make his first career start Thursday night against the Eagles.
Mark Sanchez (shoulder) and Greg McElroy (knee) were ruled out for the preseason finale, leaving Simms, Geno Smith and newly-signed Graham Harrell as the only active quarterbacks. Smith isn't expected to play. The Jets don't want to expose him to potential injury because there's a chance he could be the opening-day starter.
Ten players were declared out by the Jets: CB Antonio Cromartie, CB Dee Milliner, DT Kenrick Ellis, LB Quinton Coples, LB Josh Mauga, WR Santonio Holmes, TE Kellen Winslow and C Nick Mangold. It's unclear if Mangold is nursing a minor injury. Traditionally, coach Rex Ryan rests his starters and key reserves in the final preseason game, and it's likely that many healthy players will get the night off.
