Vikings defensive tackle Kevin Williams is "making progress" on his way back from the hyperextended right knee he suffered in the team's third preseason game, and coach Leslie Frazier is still holding out hope the 32-year-old will be back in time for the team's season opener in Detroit on Sunday.

The Vikings will try to get Williams on the practice field this afternoon, but Frazier said they likely would have until Friday to see if Williams is able to do anything before ruling him out for the game.

They have good reason to hope Williams can return. Rookie Sharrif Floyd, who was supposed to spell Williams at defensive tackle this year, is returning from a knee injury himself, and the Vikings would like to go into Sunday's game without having to rely on the rookie to handle most of the work at the three-technique spot.
