ASHBURN, Va. -- Redskins strong safety Brandon Meriweather was limited in practice again Friday, which means his status for Monday’s game versus Philadelphia remains uncertain.

Meriweather
The Redskins don’t have to release a player’s status until Saturday -- two days before the game -- but, based on how they’ve listed players in this situation before, Meriweather likely will be listed as questionable.

Meriweather declined comment Friday. But the fact that he remained limited certainly wasn’t a great sign.

“You don’t want to push it too fast,” Redskins coach Mike Shanahan said. “You want him to be able to practice, but you don’t want him to go full speed. You don’t want to set it back so it’ll be day by day.”

Everybody else was full-go in practice.

Rule clarification: The NFL reminded teams when they can, and can’t, hit a quarterback after a handoff. There’s no change from last year: If a quarterback hands off to the back, but carries out a fake as if he’s running, a defender can hit him. Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III learned that lesson last season. That’s why, after getting hit hard after handoffs versus Cincinnati, he would throw his hands up after the handoff if a defender was near the mesh point.

Key stat: The Redskins were plus-17 in turnover differential last season compared to Philadelphia’s minus-24. Shanahan said they work on stripping the ball every day in practice -- it was evident in some drills this summer that the defensive players would attempt to poke the ball free of the backs during 11-on-11 work. That’s really nothing new. But, Shanahan said, “You’ve got to emphasize it every day. It’s usually the biggest stat in football.”
