SANTA CLARA, Calif. – A conversation between college coach and quarterback turned out to be pretty beneficial for Jim Harbaugh.

Kaepernick
Luck
Leaving Stanford a year before his prized pupil, Harbaugh had no chance to draft Andrew Luck. But the San Francisco 49ers coach ended up finding a signal-caller who drew rave reviews from Luck.

Luck and Colin Kaepernick, then Nevada's quarterback, got to know each other in 2010 at the Manning family's quarterback academy. Back at the Farm, Luck passed along the goods on Kaepernick to Harbaugh.

“When Andrew got back from the academy, I just asked him what quarterbacks stood out to him, who was good, and I asked him who he got along with," Harbaugh said Wednesday. "He lit up talking about Colin. It was the first name out of his mouth. I thought that spoke volumes."

Once Harbaugh met Kaepernick himself, he understood the connection the two young quarterbacks had.

"That was my first impression when I met Colin -- how much like Andrew he was from a personality standpoint,” Harbaugh said.

In 2011, Harbaugh’s first year with the 49ers, the team moved up to draft Kaepernick in the second round. Luck went to the Colts the following year with the No. 1 overall pick. Sunday, Harbaugh gets to see his former quarterback play against his new quarterback.
