ESPN.com's Uni Watch looked at some of the memorable helmet changes in NFL history. It brought back memories for me.

As a cub Bay Area reporter in 1991, I went to a news conference arranged by the San Francisco 49ers. It was an elaborate affair with catered food. In sportswriter’s terms: it was a big deal.

The reason?

To announce the change of the team’s helmet. The classic "SF" was changed to highlight the "49ers" part of the name. It was awful. Fans complained loudly, and the next day the whole fiasco was overturned.

It goes down as one of the strangest side stories in Bay Area sports history.

Check out the story for more insight on the unforgettable event.
