FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. -- Atlanta Falcons coach Mike Smith seemed content with his team earlier in the week, but Smith never ruled out making a roster move.

That is exactly what the Falcons did Friday by waiving safety/special-teamer Shane Schillinger.

Schillinger, a former sixth-round draft pick in 2010 out of Montana, saw action in each of the first five games as a core member on special teams. He was responsible for a mistake that led to a blocked punt by the New Jets in Week 5.

The move could mean the Falcons want to address depth at the wide receiver position with Julio Jones (foot) out for the season and Roddy White (hamstring/ankle) ailing. Two receivers are on the practice squad: rookie Darius Johnson and James Rodgers.
