Rapid Reaction: Houston Texans

By Tania Ganguli

HOUSTON -- Some thoughts from the Houston Texans' 28-23 loss to the Oakland Raiders:

What it means: The Texans extended their franchise-record losing streak to eight games, falling to a 3-6 opponent starting a former college walk-on.

Stock watch: Gary Kubiak returned to coaching after a doctor-ordered one-week hiatus as he recovered from a transient ischemic attack, or a mini-stroke. Kubiak coached from the press box on Sunday, but the Texans' afternoon looked very familiar. Just like they did in the previous two weeks, the Texans went into halftime with a lead then fell apart after halftime.

Quarterback rotation: Late in the third quarter, Kubiak benched Case Keenum and replaced him with the man who began the season as the Texans' starter. Matt Schaub's impact was nominal. He led two field goal drives to bring the Texans within five. He couldn't complete a touchdown drive despite getting the Texans all the way down to the Raiders' 2-yard line in the final minutes. A fourth-down pass fell incomplete, and the Raiders got the ball back and ran out the clock.

What's next: The Texans will face the Jacksonville Jaguars in Houston next Sunday. The Jaguars entered the season expected to be a bottom dweller, but the Texans did not. It will be a battle between two AFC South teams with a combined three wins.
