Houston Texans clinch No. 1 pick

By Nick Wagoner

The Houston Texans completed their fall from preseason Super Bowl contender to the league’s worst team Sunday and clinched the No. 1 overall pick in the 2014 NFL draft in the process.

Houston’s 16-10 loss to the Tennessee Titans dropped it to an NFL-worst 3-13 on the season. That defeat ensures the Texans will have first crack at the next crop of incoming college players.

Entering the day, there was a scenario in which the St. Louis Rams could end up with the first overall pick courtesy of the Washington Redskins. A Houston win, combined with a Redskins loss to the New York Giants, would have given the Rams the top choice but the Texans’ loss ended that drama.

This will be the third time the Texans have drafted first overall since the franchise began in 2002. Houston picked quarterback David Carr first that year and selected defensive end Mario Williams first in 2006.
