Richardson eager for first playoff game
By Mike Wells
INDIANAPOLIS -- It was about this time last year when Trent Richardson boarded a flight and flew down to Miami to cheer on the University of Alabama in the BCS National Championship against Notre Dame.
Richardson, who left at halftime because the outcome had already been determined, didn’t have anything else going on at that time. His rookie season with the Cleveland Browns was finished, so he had to find a way to entertain himself during the offseason.
“I’m not looking towards taking no vacation right now,” Richardson said. “I’m looking to playing next week and the week after that and the week after that. That’s my plans and that’s where my head is at.”
Alabama will take on Oklahoma in the Sugar Bowl on Thursday. Richardson, a big supporter of his school, has no interest in attending the game because he’s preparing for his first NFL playoff experience.
“To not be in the playoffs, that taste in your mouth is nasty, man, I’ll tell you that,” he said. “You don’t ever want that taste to be planning your trip right now to where you’re going to be at right now this time of year. I’m happy to be a Colt. I’m proud to be a Colt.”
Richardson went from a Cleveland team that’s in a rebuilding process to an Indianapolis team that expects to be in the playoffs every season. The Colts are headed to the playoffs for the 11th time in the past 12 years. Still, Richardson, who the Colts acquired from Cleveland in September, isn’t taking anything for granted. He averaged 2.9 yards and 9.5 yards a reception in 14 games with the Colts during the regular season.
“The older guys, they tell you just relish it, man, because you never know when you can make it back this far,” he said. “I’m not planning on stopping here and I’m not planning on letting this be my last year in the playoffs. Just hanging around the guys, you just got to have a winning mentality around you and that’s what these guys are based on. You listen to the older guys, man, that’s what these guys function off.”
