Jets among 4 teams interested in McCown
By Rich Cimini
Chicago Bears quarterback Josh McCown, on the verge of becoming an unrestricted free agent, said Monday morning on ESPN Radio's "Mike & Mike" that his agent is engaged in discussions with four teams. He wouldn't name the teams, but they're thought to be the Bears, New York Jets, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Houston Texans, according to ESPNChicago.com.
The Jets did, in fact, make an inquiry about McCown over the weekend, according to a league source. They're looking for a veteran quarterback, and they're also believed to have interest in Michael Vick. Frankly, I'd take Vick over McCown, based on ability, but economics will be a factor, as always. Quarterbacks of their ilk are cashing in nicely. Chad Henne re-signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars (two years, $8 million) and Matt Cassel re-upped with the Minnesota Vikings (two years, $10 million).
"To leave Chicago, it will be a situation where I’m looking to compete to start or to start and be able to kind of grow more as a player," McCown told "Mike & Mike," via ESPNChicago.com. "The only way as a player that you can do that is on the field. That will definitely be something that we are looking at. So we’ll see. We’ll see what opportunities come and where we are at tomorrow.”
Free agency starts at 4 p.m. Tuesday.
