Around the NFC South: Ellis trying to catch up
Posted by ESPN.com's Pat Yasinskas
- The Saints and first-round pick Sedrick Ellis are trying to make up for lost time after the defensive tackle finally signed his contract. Defensive line coach Ed Orgeron made sure Ellis got a lot of work on his first day of practice.
- It doesn't appear as if the knee injury suffered by defensive tackle Ian Scott is too severe. It appears to be a knee sprain and it likely will cost Scott several weeks of practice, but he should be fine for the start of the regular season.
- The Bucs didn't use a second-round pick on Dexter Jackson to be only a return man. Jackson may start off primarily on special teams, but the Bucs are hoping he can develop as a receiver in a way similar to how Carolina's Steve Smith emerged as one of the best in the game.
- As they've said all along, the Falcons are in no rush to make a decision on a starting quarterback. They want to see rookie Matt Ryan in a couple of preseason games before anything is settled.
