Looking at NFC South Power Rankings
By Pat Yasinskas
Despite a very strong effort by John “The Anchor’’ Clayton, the New Orleans Saints have held onto the No. 2 spot in the latest ESPN.com Power Rankings.
Yep, as you might expect, Clayton voted the Saints at No. 7 after their 16-14 victory against Carolina on Sunday. Fortunately, for the Saints, James Walker had them at No. 1 and Mike Sando and Paul Kuharsky put them second.
Despite a No. 2 overall vote from Clayton, the Falcons came in at No. 5. Walker is to the Falcons what Clayton is to the Saints. Walker had the Falcons at No. 7.
Anyway, we’ve got two NFC South teams in the top five, which means we’re the only division that can say that.
I’m a little perplexed about Tampa Bay’s ranking. The Bucs were No. 20 last week and they had a bye. But, somehow, they tumbled to No. 23. With their fourth straight loss the Carolina Panthers fell to the part of the rankings that start with a “3.’’ They’re No. 30 with only Detroit and Buffalo beneath them.
