San Diego gets big value in Liuget
By Bill Williamson
The San Diego Chargers just got excellent value by sitting and waiting for the best player to fall to them at No. 18.
The Chargers, armed with five picks in the first 89 choices, stood pat and waited for several players to fall to them.
I -- as did many league observers -- thought the Chargers would go for someone like Cal’s Cam Jordan if he were available. Jordan was available, but the Chargers took advantage of the short fall of Corey Liuget. The Illinois defensive lineman was expected to be a top-15 pick.
The Chargers’ primary focus was adding to the defense, and Liuget is a strong addition for the unit that finished No. 1 in the NFL in total defense. Liuget should be able to help San Diego's 3-4 defense at both end and tackle. He is very disruptive and he should be an anchor to this line.
This is a good start to what could be a strong draft for San Diego. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Chargers move back into the first round to grab a pass-rusher or an offensive lineman.
