Alex Smith takes high road on Crabtree
By Mike Sando
San Francisco 49ers quarterback Alex Smith prodded teammate Michael Crabtree when it seemed appropriate.
Crabtree had failed to show up for player-organized workouts, keeping to himself even though he was already in the Bay Area. Why hadn't Crabtree shown up to that point?
"Great question," Smith told reporters June 1. "Asking the wrong guy."
Crabtree showed up within five days, only to say he wasn't ready to declare Smith the starting quarterback.
Smith spoke to reporters again Thursday, and this time he countered perceptions that his relationship with Crabtree was ever less than stellar. He also spoke with Crabtree.
"As far as our chemistry off the field, how we get along, I think that's totally off base," Smith said, according to Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea. "He and I have gotten along since Day 1."
This should diffuse the situation for the time being. The 49ers needed Smith and Crabtree to mesh better on the field last season. They haven't worked together much this offseason, and even if they do, there are no assurances Smith will start for a full season.
