Schefter: Cowboys to re-sign Spears

By Dan Graziano

If the Cowboys are really hoping they can land Nnamdi Asomugha, that pursuit isn't keeping them from other business. Adam Schefter tweeted Friday afternoon that the Cowboys have agreed to terms with defensive end Marcus Spears on a five-year, $19.2 million contract.

The big Cowboys news of the day is, of course, their sudden presence in the chase for cornerback Asomugha, the top player on the free-agent market. But even if they do get him, they have plenty of other holes to fill on defense, including two at safety and two at defensive end. With Stephen Bowen off to Washington and Jason Hatcher pursuing opportunities elsewhere, Spears became the one free-agent defensive end Dallas decided to bring back.

Re-signing a 3-4 end to a defense that was one of the absolute worst in the league last year isn't the kind of move that's going to get a fan base fired up, but think of it this way, Cowboys fans: This morning, your team had four glaring holes on defense, and now it only has three. That's... something. Right?
