Checking NFC South Total QBR

By Pat Yasinskas

Carolina rookie quarterback Cam Newton was better than New Orleans veteran Drew Brees.

That’s according to Total QBR. Newton finished a Week 8 loss with a 67.9 Total QBR, which ranked No. 8 among NFL quarterbacks who played Sunday. A score of 50 is considered average.

Newton and the Panthers lost to Minnesota, 24-21, but the Total QBR shows that Newton wasn’t the main reason for the loss.

Brees had one of his worst games in recent memory in a loss to previously winless St. Louis. Brees had a 31.6 Total QBR, which ranked No. 17 in the league.

Atlanta and Tampa Bay were off Sunday. For the season, Brees is No. 3 in the league with a 73.1 Total QBR.

Atlanta’s Matt Ryan (62.7) is No. 11. Newton (59.0) is No. 13 and Tampa Bay’s Josh Freeman (47.0) is No. 19.
