DANA POINT, Calif. -- Folks at the St. Regis are still buzzing about former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice's speech Sunday evening. A lot of writers assumed the NFL would keep the speech private, but they were wrong. NFC West blogger Mike Sando informs me that the crowd was electric.
From the Beast contingent, Jerry and Stephen Jones were on their feet several times for Rice. From the Redskins, Jim Zorn, Dan Snyder and Vinny Cerrato were all in the house. And Giants president John Mara was in attendance. As some of you might recall, she was mentioned as a potential replacement for Paul Tagliabue three years ago.
Roger Goodell: "I've invited somebody who wants my job in front of the same people who hired me."
To which Rice responded, "It's true, when I was talking with the Russians and ... the Iranians and Venezuelans, your job seemed like a pretty good one to me."
Don't you love it when wealthy people joke about stealing each other's job? My stomach's hurting.
