Report says Jags asking about Mularkey
By Paul Kuharsky
Mike Mularkey appears to be the first name to come out as part of the Jacksonville Jaguars list of head coaching candidates. Jason LaCanfora of NFL Network says the team has asked Atlanta for permission to speak with the Falcons offensive coordinator.
Mularkey has head coaching experience with the Bills and has done good work developing quarterback Matt Ryan in Atlanta. His son, Patrick, is a scouting assistant in the Jaguars’ player personnel department.
Falcons coach Mike Smith was Jacksonville’s defensive coordinator from 2003-07, so Jaguars general manager Gene Smith has a key resource for a full assessment of Mularkey.
The Falcons are preparing for a playoff game against the Giants. We don’t yet know if the team will grant permission -- though my colleague Pat Yasinskas doesn’t see how they wouldn’t -- or when he’d be free for an interview.
