Deacon Jones is a fan of James Harrison

By Jamison Hensley

INDIANAPOLIS -- James Harrison has received fines and even a suspension for his aggressive play. But the Steelers pass-rusher only received praise from Hall of Fame defensive end Deacon Jones.

In speaking this week at the Super Bowl's radio row, Jones supported the style of Harrison, who has become the NFL's most prominent figure when it comes to controversial hits. Maybe this is why Harrison was ranked 10th on ESPN.com's Any Era Team.

In addition to four fines for illegal hits against quarterbacks in 2009 and 2010, Harrison also was fined twice for unnecessary roughness during that period. Harrison totaled six fines in that two-year period. The NFL suspended him for one game after his hit on Browns quarterback Colt McCoy.

"I know they've rattled him. They've taken away his game," Jones said. "I watched the blows that this young man has delivered. I find nothing wrong with them."

Jones added, "I don't want to speak like an obvious defensive lineman, but you've got to hit. This is a game of hitting. If you get up, great. If you don't, great. I'm not here to cheerlead, I'm here to destroy."
