Landry: Jets' D better than Steelers' D
By James Walker
Sunday’s Week 2 matchup between the New York Jets and Pittsburgh Steelers will boast two of the NFL’s top defenses over the past few years. But according to Jets safety LaRon Landry, Gang Green is better in 2012.
"If you look at the starter at each position. ... I like the matchup," Landry said, via ESPNNewYork.com. "I choose my guys over any of their guys, especially in our defensive scheme."
Jets defensive tackle Mike Devito added, "We know we can be the best."
Last year Pittsburgh boasted the NFL's No. 1 defense. New York's defense wasn’t far behind at No. 5.
But which unit is better this season?
Week 1 was not a great showing for either team. The Steelers gave up 31 points in a loss to the Denver Broncos. The Jets gave up 28 points, many in the second half in "garbage time," to the Buffalo Bills.
I expect a much better performance from both defenses when facing each other. This has the making of a physical, low scoring game. Both the Steelers and Jets want to control the line of scrimmage.
But the Jets need Pro Bowl cornerback Darrelle Revis to play his best. Revis missed his second straight day of practice with a concussion, and his status remains uncertain. Jets coach Rex Ryan said they will decide Revis' status on Saturday.
The Jets said in training camp that they could be the top defense in the NFL this season. They have a chance to prove it Sunday against last year's best defense.
