QB Watch: Dolphins' Ryan Tannehill
By James Walker
A weekly analysis of the Dolphins' quarterback play.
Rewind: Miami Dolphins second-year quarterback Ryan Tannehill earned his eighth career victory in a 23-10 win over the Cleveland Browns. Tannehill threw for 272 yards, one touchdown and one interception. He also had an 82.3 passer rating. Most importantly, Tannehill put together two clutch touchdown drives in the second half to put the game out of reach. Tannehill had his best chemistry with veteran receiver Brian Hartline, who led the Dolphins with nine receptions for 114 yards and a touchdown.
Fast-forward: Last week, Tannehill outdueled fellow 2012 quarterback class member Brandon Weeden of Cleveland. Tannehill will face his second 2012 quarterback class member Sunday in Andrew Luck of the Colts. Both quarterbacks put on a tremendous aerial show last season during a 23-20 win for Indianapolis. Luck threw for 433 yards and Tannehill added 290 yards. Tannehill will try to get his first win against Luck in what could be a budding rivalry between these young AFC quarterbacks.
Assistance wanted: Tannehill had virtually no help from his running game in Week 1. The Dolphins rushed for 20 yards on 23 carries in the win over Cleveland. Miami averaged 0.9 yards per carry. Miami scored just six points in the first half before Tannehill carried the offense in the second half. Tannehill led three scoring drives in the third and fourth quarters, highlighted by a beautiful 34-yard touchdown pass to Hartline.
Prediction: Tannehill played well in Indianapolis last year as a rookie. Therefore, there is a proven track record that Miami’s quarterback is capable of having a good performance at Lucas Oil Stadium. The Colts’ defense had a lot of issues last week with Oakland Raiders quarterback Terrelle Pryor, especially with scrambling. Tannehill is a different kind of quarterback, and he must get off to a fast start. Tannehill has struggled early in games dating back to the preseason.
