Injury report: Burnett taking it slow
By Rob Demovsky
GREEN BAY, Wis. -- The last thing the Green Bay Packers want is a repeat of last week, when starting safety Morgan Burnett practiced Wednesday and Thursday only to drop out late in the week and then miss the opener against the San Francisco 49ers.
Although Burnett practiced on Thursday, the Packers have limited his snaps not only to go easy on his injured hamstring but also to get the other safeties adequate preparation time if they need to play on Sunday against the Washington Redskins.
“It’s better than last week,” Burnett said after Thursday’s practice. “It’s improving. It’s getting there, so we’re going to see how I feel tomorrow.”
Without Burnett, the fourth-year pro who is their most experienced safety, the Packers allowed 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick to throw for 412 yards on Sunday.
“You look at his experience in our defense, you look at his responsibility, and he’s the key communicator,” Packers coach Mike McCarthy said. “He’s been doing it since Day 1. He’s obviously someone we hold in high regard. Anytime, technically your quarterback of your defense is not with you, it’s the responsibility of the others to pick it up. But there’s a reason why he’s back there. He’s a very good player.”
Tight end Jermichael Finley (toe) and guard Josh Sitton (back) both returned to practice on Thursday. That was a day earlier than expected for Finley.
“Jermichael Finley is making progress,” McCarthy said. “He was able to do some things today. Hopefully he’ll continue to make progress and go tomorrow.”
Backup cornerback/special teams ace Jarrett Bush was added to the report after he sustained a hamstring injury in practice. Also, linebacker Nick Perry was downgraded from a full participant on Wednesday to limited on Thursday because he was still dealing with issues related to the stinger he sustained against the 49ers.
Here’s the full injury report:
- S Morgan Burnett (hamstring, limited participation)
- CB Jarrett Bush (hamstring, limited participation)
- TE Jermichael Finley (toe, limited participation)
