Avril will play Sunday; Browner is doubtful

RENTON, Wash. -- Defensive end Cliff Avril, the Seattle Seahawks' top offseason acquisition on defense, finally will get on the field Sunday when the Seahawks host the San Francisco 49ers. But starting cornerback Brandon Browner is doubtful with a hamstring injury.

“We’ll have to see what happens on game day,” coach Pete Carroll said Friday about Browner. “He hasn’t been able to get as much work as we hoped. He’s been running, but we couldn’t get him on the field.”

Browner was a game-day decision last week in the season opener against Carolina and did not play.

Avril didn’t play last weekend because of a hamstring injury, but he practiced at full speed this Thursday and Friday.

“Cliff looks good,” Carroll said. “He had a great week. He’s full-speed. He could have played last week, but now he’s had time getting all the reps in and he’s ready to go.”

Avril said he’s eager to get out there Sunday.

“It’ll be fun,” he said. “I feel like I’m ready. I feel better every day. This is the best I’ve felt since before training camp. I felt good coming off the line [Friday at practice].”

Avril also said he’s looking forward to hearing the 12th Man crowd noise Sunday at CenturyLink Field. The home fans are hoping to set a mark for the Guinness World Records book on decibel level in an outdoor stadium.

“I’m ready to see what this crowd is like, man,” Avril said. “That’s the thing everybody talks about here. As a defensive player, that’s what we look for.”

Defensive end Chris Clemons, coming back from offseason ACL surgery, is listed as questionable after practicing Thursday and Friday. But Carroll seemed to indicate Clemons might be another week away.

“He’s really pushing it,” Carroll said. “He’s going to have a real chance in the next couple of weeks to get back on the field for us. We’re thrilled he will be back this soon.”

Carroll also said that backup strong safety Jeron Johnson (hamstring) will not play Sunday.
